
Next item to be placed into my "Read This" folder comes from the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work. It is a literature review entitled, Combined Exposure to Noise and Ototoxic Substances.
"Workers are commonly exposed to multiple agents. Physiological interactions with some mixed exposures can lead to an increase in the severity of a harmful effect. This applies not only to the combination of interfering chemical substances but in certain cases to the co-action of chemical and physical factors as well. Hence, it is obvious that the effects of ototoxic substances on ear function can be aggravated by noise, which remains a well-established cause of hearing impairment."
I'll pass along a couple of IYI's (If You're Interested) from the Journal of Safety Research. One with hard data, and one that is somewhat squish-ier. If your campus subscribes to the journal, you may be able to look these up online.
One study (still in press analyzed) data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) from 2002-2007, in order to examine the epidemiology of injuries among persons presenting to an ED with an injury associated with a riding lawnmower. Not a big surprise that among the major injury circumstances are "fell off of mower" and "
mower rolled or flipped over."

For me, studies on the more abstract topic of safety climate tend to be less directly useful for workplace application. I still find it interesting to read how researchers try to provide meaningful research in the area. The latest contribution is a study on the relationship between PPE use and safety climate.

A new study in the National Safety Council’s Journal of Safety Research advances the field and effective use of behavioral safety by identifying key knowledge gaps that warrant additional research.
